Common Symptoms and When to See a Doctor

In your daily lives, you will often experience symptoms that are bothersome but are not serious. However, understanding what kind of symptoms might require a visit to the doctor is the key to maintain good health. Eastern Diagnostics offers help and guides you through recognizing common symptoms and at what stage you should decide to seek medical help.

  • Fever

A fever is a common response of your body fighting an infection. A low-grade fever is not alarming, but if your temperature exceeds 100.4 degree F and lasts for more than two days, or if it is accompanied by rash, difficulty breathing or severe headache, it is time you make an appointment with a doctor. For infant and toddlers, a lower threshold (100.4 degrees) requires immediate medical attention.

  • Cough

Coughs are often benign and linked to common colds. If, however, the cough persists for than three weeks, becomes severe, or is accompanied with chest pain, shortness of breath, or bloody phlegm, it is time to seek medical advice. These symptoms could indicate more serious problems of the upper respiratory tract.

  • Headaches

Occasional headaches are common and usually not a cause for concern. However, if you experience headaches that are severe than usual, occur frequently, or are accompanied by other symptoms like visual disturbances, nausea, or dizziness, you should consult a doctor. These could be signs of migraine or other underlying conditions.

  • Abdominal Pain

While mild abdominal pain can be caused indigestion or gas, severe persistent pain, especially if it is localized to a specific area, requires medical intervention. It could be a sign of something more severe such as appendicitis or gall stones, especially if accompanied by fever, vomiting or changes in bowel habits.

  • Fatigue

Feeling tired is normal after physical activity or a busy day. But if you feel consistently worn out and exhausted, even after rest or if fatigue is affecting your ability to perform daily activities, it might be due to issues like diabetes, thyroid, depression or anaemia. Consult a doctor.

  • Change in Weight

Unintended weight loss or gain can be a sign of an underlying health problem. Weight changes that are sudden or significant- more than 5% of your body weight within a month without a reason, should be evaluated by a physician.

  • Skin Changes

Any new growths, moles that change in colour, size or shape, or wounds that refuse to heal should prompt a visit to the doctor. Such changes can be signs of skin conditions that need treatment, including skin cancer.
