Cardiac Screenings a Must for Early Detection of Heart Diseases

Heart diseases are on the rise and continue to be the leading cause of death throughout the world. Many heart conditions can, however, be effectively managed and even prevented through early detection and intervention. Cardiac screening tests can play a crucial role by identifying issues relating to the heart. In this blog, we will highlight the importance of regular heart screenings and describe some common tests like ECG(Electrocardiogram), Echocardiogram and Stress Tests.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An Electrocardiogram, commonly referred to as ECG, is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the heart, for a short period. This is a first-line screening tool. It is quick and painless too.
During an ECG, electrodes are attached to specific locations–chest, arms and legs. The electrodes detect the electrical impulses generated by the contracting heart. The resulting graph provides information about the heart’s rhythm, rate and abnormalities, like arrhythmias or conduction abnormalities.

Echocardiogram

An Echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves (Ultrasound) to create detailed images of the heart’s structure and function. This is particularly useful for assessing the heart’s chambers, valves and overall pumping ability.
During an Echocardiogram, a trained technician of Eastern Diagnostics, applies a gel on your chest and uses a hand-held device, called transducer, to capture images of your heart from different angles. This helps them to visualize abnormalities of the heart’s structure or blood flow and diagnose heart valve problems, congenital defects or heart muscle diseases.

Stress Tests

Stress Tests, also known as treadmill test, evaluate how your heart functions during physical activity. This helps to identify heart conditions when the heart is working harder, such as coronary artery disease. During a Stress Test, the technicians at Eastern Diagnostics recommends you to walk on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike, while your blood pressure, heart rate and ECG would be continuously monitored. The aim is to reach a target heart rate based on your age and physical condition. Abnormalities in ECG, chest pain or shortness of breath, during the test indicate underlying heart issues.

Regular Screening a Must

We, at Eastern Diagnostics, stress the need for regular ECG, Echocardiogram and Stress Tests, as they are critical for early detection of heart diseases. The tests uncover hidden heart conditions, ensuring early treatment and lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce heart-related complications. If you have heart conditions or are concerned about your heart health, consult a doctor who would advise an appropriate screening test. Early detection not only saves lives, but also improves the quality of lives of the patients.
